Description
Alexandra is located in the very heart of Central Otago, about 3/4 of the way down the South Island of New Zealand. Our lat/long is approx 45.20 deg S, 169.35 deg E.
"Alex" is also about as far from the sea as you can get in NZ, and as a consequence gets hot Summers and cool Winters. Summer maximums can reach into the mid 30's (deg C) and winter temperatures of well below freezing are common.
Flying-wise, the weather is pretty good! Our climate is dry so seldom is flying cancelled due to weather. Alex has both sealed and grass runways. The field altitude is 750'.
We use 119.1 for local flying including winch launches, however on good gliding days glider traffic is often on 133.55 MHz once away from the airfield.
The club owns a Cessna 172 for flight training and aerotowing; a 2-seat Twin Astir glider; and a single seat PW5 glider for solo flying.
