Description

Counties Manukau were the 2003 holders of the Division 1 Slazenger Cup. We are a very forward thinking association with plans to develop our sport and facilities in the Counties Manukau region. Please scan our website for further information.

History:
Counties Manukau Badminton Association has a history stretching back some 65 years. Originally Franklin Badminton sub-Association we were part of Auckland Badminton Association, however in 1984 in view of our growth and with the blessing of the Auckland Association, we applied for major association status and this was granted by the NZ Badminton Federation. Counties Badminton Association was formed and in subsequent years a name change was facilitated to become Counties Manukau Badminton Association.

In 1974, the Franklin Badminton sub-Association was delightd to officially open a purpose built 6 court hall in Elliot St, Papakura. This is the flagship of the Counties Manukau Badminton Association and plans are now underway to extend the facility with additional courts. In 2003 the hall was officially renamed the Ray Phillips Badminton Centre in memory of the man who was instrumental in getting the hall built.

The Association runs competition that cater for both Junior and Senior players. These include interclub competitions throughout the year, Open and Closed tournaments and a Secondary Schools league. Counties Manukau Badminton has also hosted many national and international events at its facilities over the years.

The Association enters all New Zealand and Northern Region competitions. In 2004 at representative level we have 3 Senior Division teams, 5 Masters Division teams, 1 Veterans Division team and 6 junior division teams. All these teams travel to various parts of the North Island to compete in their competitions. Counties Manukau Badminton are the current holders of the Division One Slazenger Cup.

The Association officially has seven Senior clubs, 2 Ladies Day club, 6 Junior clubs and several high schools who are regularly involved in official competition. Unofficially there are many more schools and clubs that play within the Association which benefit from both the facilities available and the personnel within the association. Numerically we are the 6th largest association in New Zealand.

When the Association has no organised use of the courts, they are availble for public use or private hire. Many of our clubs currently operate their own club nights from within the hall.
